Japan Series No. 5 - Mitutoyo’s Kawasaki Factory: Advancing Optical Measurement

As part of our visit to Japan, H Roberts & Sons also toured Mitutoyo’s Kawasaki facility, a site focused on the development and production of optical measurement technologies.

This factory highlights a different side of Mitutoyo’s capabilities, moving beyond contact-based measurement into the world of optical lenses and vision measuring systems

Precision Through Optics

At the Kawasaki facility, we were able to see the production of optical lenses used across Mitutoyo’s range of vision and optical measuring equipment.

The level of precision required in lens manufacturing is extremely high. Even the smallest imperfection can impact measurement accuracy, so every stage of production is tightly controlled.

From grinding and polishing to coating and inspection, each lens is produced to exacting standards to ensure clarity, accuracy, and consistency.

Vision Measuring Systems

The facility also plays a key role in the production of vision and optical measurement equipment.

These systems are increasingly important in modern manufacturing, allowing for fast, non-contact measurement of complex components. They are particularly valuable where delicate parts or intricate geometries make traditional contact measurement less practical.

Seeing these systems being assembled and tested gave a clear understanding of how advanced optics, software, and precision engineering come together.

Combining Hardware and Software

One of the key takeaways from the Kawasaki visit was how closely optical hardware and software are integrated.

Accurate measurement is not just about high-quality lenses, but also about how data is captured, processed, and interpreted. The systems developed here combine both elements to deliver reliable and repeatable results.

This represents an important shift in metrology towards more automated and intelligent measurement solutions.

Expanding Measurement Capabilities

The Kawasaki facility demonstrates how Mitutoyo continues to expand beyond traditional measurement tools.

Optical and vision systems open up new possibilities, allowing manufacturers to measure faster, reduce human error, and inspect features that would be difficult or impossible with contact instruments.

It is a clear example of how metrology is evolving alongside modern production methods.

Final Thoughts

For H Roberts & Sons, visiting the Kawasaki factory provided valuable insight into the future direction of measurement technology.

It showed how Mitutoyo is combining precision engineering with advanced optics and digital systems to meet the changing needs of industry.

From traditional tools to cutting-edge optical systems, the same commitment to accuracy and reliability is evident throughout.

Precision is no longer limited to contact measurement alone. With facilities like Kawasaki, Mitutoyo continues to lead the way in expanding what is possible.
